re:collection is a public history project about South Africa’s colonial past and the connections to the present that continue to haunt us.

multi perspective storytelling

web perspectives.jpg

Through multi disciplinary storytelling we share diverse perspectives on the issues relating to human remains in scientific institutions. We aim to appreciate and share understanding of ancestral knowledge and connection and use stories, dialogue, and collaborative processes to counter the legacies of race science and colonialism toward healing, repair, and justice.

about

re:collection is a public history project dedicated to unearthing and amplifying lesser known histories,

re-looking at collections in universities and museums and showing the connections across time and space that continues to shape the present.

re:collection focuses especially on colonial history in Southern Africa and the collections of human remains and artefacts taken from indigenous communities without consent, that remain at museums and scientific institutions across the world.

While we work closely with researchers, our primary focus is on multimedia storytelling in the form of podcasting, documentary film, art and exhibition.

re:collection is an independent non-profit project based on the belief that healing requires an ongoing, honest dialogue and a willingness to learn from the past.

Story telling & research of this type is rare.
